Throughout the early 1990s, Apple had tried to create a "next-generation" OS to succeed its classic Mac OS through the Taligent, Copland and Gershwin projects, but all were eventually abandoned. Its graphical user interface was built on top of an object-oriented GUI toolkit using the Objective-C programming language. The kernel of NeXTSTEP is based upon the Mach kernel, which was originally developed at Carnegie Mellon University, with additional kernel layers and low-level user space code derived from parts of BSD. There, the Unix-like NeXTSTEP operating system was developed, before being launched in 1989. Kopp won the first hand of heads up, took the chip lead, and never gave it up. That hand seemed to right the ship for Kopp who took a nearly-even chip stack into heads-up play and never looked back. McEwen moved all in with pocket sixes but ran into the pocket aces of Kopp. However, for a while, it was Brian Jones who was winning all the pots, holding half of the chips in play before Preston McEwen's final hand. Still, though he had taken a blow, he composed himself and got back to work. Before that I was opening lots of hands, putting ICM pressure on." He got paid on all three streets to hold about one-third of the chips in play 10-handed. Soon thereafter, he flopped trips against fellow big-stack Lam Nguyen, who was also the start-of-day chip leader. ![]() He was the overwhelming chip leader once that final 10 were set. Mantaray S1 has a lot of visible light and makes it hard to see the bills. The beam looks purple instead of a deep blue/purple. Some points to make: The Xanes 51UV uses a 395nm LED, but may actually be above 400nm. Unfortunately, not all black lights are the same, and not all black lights can make minerals glow. Basically, 365nm is preferred over 395 for most applications where UV is needed. Hopefully this article has helped you understand a little bit more exactly how and why minerals glow under certain kinds of black light. Fluorite contains so much fluorescence that it often times will glow under both short wave and long wave UV light. Fluorite is probably the most common of these “long wave” fluorescent minerals. There are some minerals, however, that will glow under long wave UV light, or long wave black light. This means that a large amount of visible light is passing through the filter, which over powers, or drowns out the actual UV light. As I mentioned earlier, the inexpensive LED black light lamps almost always emit long wave UV light. Unfortunately, the inexpensive UV LED flashlight you bought for $5 probably isn’t going to work very well with many minerals. Will the Inexpensive Blacklight Flashlight I Bought Make Minerals Glow? Not only is this light visible, it’s often times reflected as fluorescent light. When these minerals are under short wave ultraviolet light, or short wave black light, which is invisible to us humans, the light that is reflected by the minerals is reflected as visible light. It is this change in wavelength that creates the color of the mineral. When light shines, these special minerals temporarily absorb some of that light and then release, or reflect, a small amount of light that is of a different wavelength. This special ability is called fluorescence. Whats interesting though is that some minerals have the unique ability to glow under black lights, or UV light. As a matter of fact, that is how we humans are able to see the minerals. Why Do Minerals Glow More Under Short Wave Ultraviolet Light?Īll minerals have the ability to reflect light. Since most of the visible light is filtered, and only UV light is passing through, short wave ultraviolet lights are the best black lights for minerals. These filters can be somewhat expensive which is why high quality shortwave UV lights are so expensive when compared to unfiltered long wave UV lights. Too much visible light passes through and drowns out the “glow”.įiltered short wave UV lights on the other hand, filter out almost all visible light, allowing only shortwave ultraviolet light to pass through. As you can imagine, unfiltered UV lights allow a large amount of visible light through, rendering it useless for making many minerals glow. There are two types of short wave UV light filtered and unfiltered. In nature, long wave UV light is present in sunlight and is not harmful to humans. Because of that, the black lights we use as hobbyists are a great way to produce long wave UV light. These filters are generally inexpensive to buy for that reason. Long wave UV lights have filters which screen out a lot of the visible light they produce, but not all. What is the difference between short wave UV light and long wave UV light? Long wave Ultraviolet Light Ultraviolet light falls in the range of the electromagnetic spectrum between visible light and X-rays. It’s on this spectrum that we find UV light, X-rays and gamma rays. ![]() UV light is not visible to the human eye.Įlectromagnetic radiation is transmitted in waves or particles at different wavelengths and frequencies called the electromagnetic spectrum. I don't believe that there are any rules in tattooing but a lot of tattooers do and my style of working goes against many of the acceptable norms and rules.Ultraviolet light is a type of electromagnetic radiation, just like radio waves, infrared, X-rays and gamma-rays. "I think their issues stem from the fact that my style falls outside of any known or acceptable tattoo styles. Newell even told me, "The bulk of the really hateful things people say to me are from other tattooers who work in more traditional styles," she adds. You typically will find black light tattoos in modern styles, like Newell's hand-drawn aesthetic, instead of traditional ones. What types of glow in the dark tattoo styles work best? You'll just need to get touchups when need, which is standard for most tattoos. Colored tattoos generally fade over time faster than all-black ones, she adds. Like any tattoo, it's "longevity is directly connected to the amount of energy that you put into caring for it properly, like using sunscreen," Newell says. Kayla Newell How long do glow in the dark tattoos last? ![]() “Energy market participants took full advantage of the declared disaster, or did not take the appropriate steps to stop the exorbitant and unconscionable prices.”Įnergy Transfer said years of investment meant it was able to keep its pipelines running and sell gas from storage, providing critical supplies when others could not. Energy Transfer posted its highest quarterly net income on record, more than three times its previous best quarter. What Abbott didn’t mention was the massive windfall key industry players made during the freeze. ![]() Even though gas failed in its role as a reliable backup fuel during the freeze, Abbott pushed regulators in a letter to strengthen incentives for fossil fuel and nuclear generators while increasing “reliability costs” for intermittent renewable power sources. This week, Governor Greg Abbott appeared to double down on his early assessment that wind and solar were prime culprits of the freeze. Texas lawmakers have set aside $10 billion to help natural gas utilities cover their natural gas costs from the storm through low-interest, state-backed bonds.Ī special legislative session convened Thursday but the agenda did not include any measures to fix the power grid. Millions of Texans are now faced with the prospect of paying higher gas prices for years as utilities seek to spread the cost over a decade or more. The BNEF estimate is based on spot prices at major hubs assessed by S&P Global Platts rather than private contracts, so is likely an upper limit of the total cost. A further $3 billion was spent by utilities providing gas for cooking, heating and fireplaces. The cost of gas for power generation alone was about $8.1 billion, or 75 times normal levels. Soon customers will be saddled with the bill.Īnd it’s a big one: The total comes to about $11.1 billion for a storm that lasted for just five days, according to estimates by BloombergNEF analysts Jade Patterson and Nakul Nair. Power producers were forced to pay top dollar in the spot market for whatever gas they could find. As the flow of gas cratered, everyone scrambled to secure enough supply, sparking one of the wildest price surges in history. Interviews with energy executives and an analysis of public records by Bloomberg News show that natural gas producers in the Permian shale basin began to drastically reduce output days before power companies cut them off. It’s now becoming clear that while millions of Texans endured days of power cuts, the state’s gas producers contributed to fuel shortages, allowing pipelines and traders to profit handsomely off them. (Bloomberg) - The official autopsy of the great Texas winter blackout of February 2021 quickly established a clear timeline of events: Electric utilities cut off power to customers and distributors as well as natural gas producers, which in turn triggered a negative feedback loop that sunk the state deeper and deeper into frigid darkness.
